On the 12th of May, Bilgi University hosted an ELT event ‘An open event to Collaboration in ELT’. It was a one day, but a full day conference with really informative talks.First of all I was surprised when I was given a ‘gigantic’ name tag at the entrance. One side had my name and instution but at the back I could see all the program. It would be very easy to find out my way during the conference. It was so practical to use. I learned it was Burcu Tezcan’s idea
As I was going to make a presenation one ‘Ask me’ person helped me to find my room and get ready for my speech.Everything was thought in detail.
We started with Michael McCarthy’s presentation on how to use corpus for teaching grammar. It was so interesting to see the mistakes classified and explained by him and his friend,Geraldine Mark. After her speech I listened to Adam Simpson from Sabancı University talking about how to form groups. He gave some useful hints to form unproblematic groups during a course . After Adam, I made my presentation. I Like talking about Moodle, this time I talked about how to use it for teaching Writing. You can see my presentation below.
In the afternoon I had a chance to attend Deniz Kurtoğlu Eken’s plenary on ‘I-sources as my Re-sources’. She talked on her research on the motivation of ELT teachers in Turkey. There were some interesting results. She made people guess the results before showing them. It made the presentation more interesting.
After this interactive plenary I joined Kristine Smith’s session on how to be an online moderator. She gave some examples of her own online courses, the problems she encountered and how she solved them. It was really beneficial and worthwhile spending a Saturday at a school with friends.
